Thank you! You are right. Employment on the reservation is just like anywhere else in the nation. Only, we have other obstacles as Natives obtaining jobs, even at the Casino. Our own casino management practices lateral violence by failing to hire or promote Native employees. High paying positions are reserved for the Non-Native employees. Should you get employed on the reservation, you still have more hoops to jump through and it is not Native/Tulalip Preference! Like Jr. in Alexie's book, it seems hopeless upon more hopelessness.
I've never been in a casino or on a reservation so I wouldn't know these things, and without having taken this class I don't think I would have thought too much about it saddly. Thank you for posting and sorry that I wasn't already following you. I hope to reply to more of your posts in the future.

ReplyDeleteThe point I was making, is that like in the corporate ladder white collar world, our Tribal Casino & Bingo is just the same only on a smaller scale. Have you ever had to strive for a position, a place in the world, only to find out that it is being unjustly taken from you for reasons beyond your control? Prejudices come in many forms. It is not only, racial but can be ethical, political and/or nepotism. I hope readers can understand that although Tulalip Tribes have our own Casino & Bingo, it does not necessarily make it easier for tribal members to maintain employment or even get promoted. Politics and nepotism sometimes works against us by our own management. It seems harder for some tribal members than others to accept the fact that we face termination, demotion and prejudices by our own people. Jr., in Alexie’s novel for example, transcends his own lifestyle to accomplish an acceptance by a dominate society that he believes will get him off his reservation.
You do not have to go to a Casino & Bingo or to a reservation to know the real meaning of prejudices and preference. Jr. may find that discrimination, in one form or another, are on the reservation and off.
Thank you for reading.
